After returning from two unforgettable weeks at SanWild Sanctuary & Reserve, I'm still processing just how magical the experience was. Though I've done several volunteer holidays before, something about Africa baffles me and keeps pulling me back, and this trip reminded me exactly why. As soon as I get off the plane, I think to myself, "wow".
Why I chose SanWild
I wanted a smaller, more intimate wildlife conservation project in Africa this time around, yet one that was still deeply meaningful. SanWild's strong conservation ethos stood out to me. The team's commitment to protecting genetic diversity, preventing poaching, and working with nature rather than against it gave the project real depth, and I think it sets it apart on a different level from other projects. They've got a strong sense of what they're doing and why they are doing it, which is amazing.
Daily life in the bush
One of the simplest yet most rewarding aspects of this volunteer experience was simply being outdoors from dawn until dusk. Each morning, I'd grab a coffee at the lodge, sit outside as the sun rose, and then spend the day immersed in the sights, sounds, and smells of the bush. I loved that, days rarely went as planned; what was discussed the night before often changed by morning. Things were changing all the time, which made it exciting, and responding to things that were needed there and then made us feel useful.
The landscape during the dry season is stunning: red dirt roads, piercing blue skies, and a vibrancy that photos can't quite capture. Being away from screens and routines, I felt completely present and grounded.
Memorable wildlife encounters
Volunteering at SanWild is full of unforgettable moments with wildlife; some are tender, while others are mischievous!
- Bakkis, the baby goat, arrived just 24 hours old while I was there. The team cared for him around the clock, and by the time I left, he was noisy, playful, and part of the family.
- The elephants were a highlight, especially one cheeky bull, Maluto, who loved pulling water pipes out of the ground just hours after the team had fixed them. He clearly preferred chaos over simply drinking from the waterholes!
- Zyla, a rescued cheetah, gave me one of my most memorable experiences. We watched her laze in the heat one day, then days later tracked her after she'd wandered miles away. Finally, I spotted her perfectly camouflaged, feasting on an antelope she'd hunted herself. Seeing such natural instincts in action, considering she was hand-raised, was incredible.
I also loved that many of the animals kept their distance. It felt right, and made me realise just how authentic and ethical SanWild’s approach is. Wild creatures showing healthy wariness of humans ultimately keep them safer.
Lessons and conversations
What made this African volunteer experience so enriching wasn't just the wildlife but the people. The team is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, always eager to share insights into conservation, anti-poaching strategies, and even the threats of mining. Spending one-on-one time with them was a privilege; I learned so much more than I expected.
Tips for future SanWild volunteers
- Go with an open mind: Plans will change, and that's part of the adventure!
- Be prepared for the dry season: Water shortages can affect both animals and humans, so patience is essential.
- Pack a nail brush and nail clippers: They're small but invaluable after long days of digging and working outdoors.
- Ask questions: The staff and students are a wealth of knowledge, and every conversation adds context to the conservation work.
Final thoughts
SanWild is more than just another volunteer project in Africa; it's an opportunity to reconnect with nature, contribute to vital conservation work, and experience Africa in its raw, untamed beauty. I left wishing I could have extended my stay. The warmth of the team, the unpredictability of each day, and the chance to witness wildlife being truly wild made it one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
If you're considering volunteering with wildlife, the SanWild Sanctuary & Reserve might just steal a piece of your heart, like it did mine.
