The following blog was written by volunteer Cynthia Miyamoto, who joined us at Chimp Eden - The Jane Goodall Institute in August last year. Her story captures what it’s really like to volunteer with rescued chimpanzees in South Africa and why wildlife conservation volunteering can be such a life-changing experience!
My experience at Chimp Eden reaffirmed my appreciation for The Great Projects and their exceptional support, especially for solo travellers like me. After settling into the welcoming atmosphere and forming strong connections with both staff and fellow volunteers, I found myself eager to embrace new experiences and deepen my involvement with wildlife conservation.
The anticipation of joining upcoming projects in 2026, like my return to Chimp Eden and my newly booked adventure at SanWild Sanctuary and Reserve, fills me with excitement and gratitude. With each journey, I discover more about myself and the incredible animals we strive to protect through wildlife conservation volunteering, knowing that every trip brings me closer to fulfilling my dream of making a positive impact on the world of animal welfare.
The sense of community and purpose at Chimp Eden made each day memorable, and as I look forward to future opportunities, I remain deeply thankful for the chance to contribute to such meaningful work alongside passionate individuals who share my commitment to these remarkable creatures and to chimpanzee conservation.
My Arrival at Chimp Eden
Stepping out of the van, I was struck by how the buildings seemed to echo memories I could not quite reach, creating a sense of déjà vu. The research I had done before arriving, poring over each biography, came to life as I approached Chimp Eden, South Africa's only chimpanzee rescue sanctuary. I recognised this was the sight “Escape to Chimp Eden” had been filmed in the mid 2000’s. Hearing the chimpanzees' calls reminded me how much “Escape to Chimp Eden” inspired me, never expecting I'd visit the sanctuary myself as a chimpanzee sanctuary volunteer.
As I stood, taking in my surroundings, a wave of emotion washed over me, reminding me that this moment had been years in the making. The gentle breeze carried the unmistakable sounds of chimpanzees, their calls intertwining with my memories and bringing a sense of awe to the present. I found myself reflecting on the countless hours spent watching “Escape to Chimp Eden,” never imagining I would one day walk the ground while volunteering with rescued chimpanzees.
A Journey of Healing and Gratitude
Feeling both humble and grateful, I recognised that my journey had come full circle. The anticipation and preparation that led me to Chimp Eden transformed into meaningful opportunities to contribute directly to the healing and happiness of the remarkable chimpanzees whose resilience had long inspired me. Each day ahead promised new chances to make a difference, deepening my sense of purpose and reinforcing the connection I felt with these incredible animals.

The privilege of participating in their recovery and well-being filled me with gratitude, reminding me that every moment spent at the sanctuary was part of a larger story. As I reflected on the path that brought me here, I felt a renewed commitment to support the sanctuary’s mission and to honour the strength and spirit of the chimpanzees who had touched my heart from afar.
Life as a Chimpanzee Sanctuary Volunteer
As I followed the staff through the sanctuary’s gates, the anticipation that had built up over months of planning finally transformed into a sense of belonging. The sights and sounds of Chimp Eden became more vivid with each step, sunlight filtering through the trees, laughter echoing from the volunteer quarters, and the distant chatter of chimpanzees blending with the peaceful ambience. It was clear that the sanctuary was not only a haven for rescued animals but also a gathering place for people united by a common passion.

Daily Volunteer Tasks at Chimp Eden
Breakfast for enclosures, one and two, was distributed at 7am, with fruits and vegetables hidden among the trees and bushes to encourage natural foraging before the animals were released from their sleeping dens. Most mornings, we would also place the enrichment we had created the day before. Watching the chimps race around their enclosures to find the surprises we had left was fun and entertaining.

Our daily tasks varied, including but not limited to making enrichment items like flavoured tea, fruit ice blocks, food prep, fence building, and night den cleanup, among many other tasks I had the privilege of taking part in. Like many wildlife conservation volunteering programmes, each day brought something different and offered new opportunities to contribute to the well-being of rescued chimpanzees. Immersed in the daily rhythm, I quickly found myself learning from experienced volunteers, sharing responsibilities, and witnessing firsthand the small triumphs that made every day meaningful.
Moments spent observing the chimpanzees, some playful, others contemplative, reminded me of the profound impact that kindness and dedication can have on lives once marked by hardship. With each passing day, I became more attuned to the sanctuary’s unique energy, eager to contribute and grateful for the privilege of being part of a team working tirelessly to create a brighter future for rescued chimps.
Accommodation & Food
My cabin was clean, comfortable, and quiet, with a private bath, fan, and heater. The volunteer kitchen nearby had a fridge, freezer, and unexpectedly, a washer, making it easy to do my laundry as needed.
The meal service was better than expected. Breakfast consisted of cereals, fruit, toast, coffee, and tea. Lunch and dinner varied and were always delicious. Promise consistently served healthy, tasty meals with attention to detail.
The Chimp Who Stole My Heart
Cozy is my boyfriend. We were born in the same country, but he started out in a US lab before being moved to Italy. Due to repeated beatings to the head, Cozy has permanent brain damage.
I care deeply for him, perhaps because he is an underdog. Cozy stands out as an entertaining and special chimpanzee. Leaving Chimp Eden, I felt we exchanged parts of our hearts.
Reflections on Volunteering at Chimp Eden
Each night as I settled into my cabin and prepared for the weeks ahead, I felt a renewed sense of gratitude, knowing that every moment spent at Chimp Eden I was contributing to the remarkable journey of these resilient creatures and furthering Jane Goodall’s vision for a world where compassion and care prevail.
