This magical place holds ample opportunities of spotting dolphins, turtles and of course the gracious gentle giants of the deep – the whale sharks!

What is more, you get to see these creatures in all of their natural glory as you aid their conservation in their natural habitat. Spend the duration of your trip camped out on the beach, as the very sands you sleep on are caressed by the crystal waters of the Indian Ocean.

We are fast approaching the season of whale sharks in Mafia Island (October-February), where it is the best time of year to spot these sharks drifting along the surface of the waters and filtering plankton through their iconic mouths (which by the way, can be up to 5 feet wide!) Like much other vulnerable marine life, these beautiful fish face many threats including habitat loss which results in food scarcity, and so it is imperative they receive some positive human intervention!

We have it all for you – take a look at what animals you could see in Mafia, and if the island paradise is a place you would like to explore after all your fun on the project, then we’ve got some advice on what to do there too! If that’s not enough, check out this absolutely awe-inspiring video sent through to us by Lyle, a fabulous volunteer who generously dedicated his time to these misunderstood souls. Don’t just take our word for it, check out how Lyle became one with the ocean and discovered what it was like to swim with whale sharks. Make sure your whale shark knowledge is up to scratch before your trip and check out some shocking whale shark facts!
