Happy New Year everyone! This month has got off to a great start for us all here as we've been fortunate enough to receive some incredible videos and photos from the 'Great White Shark Project', located in Kleinbaai, South Africa. This is a fantastic project, where volunteers get the chance to come face to face (or tooth to tooth!) with the ocean's top predator. A magnificent creature, the thrill of coming within inches of this leviathan of the deep is something that will ive with you for a lifetime.
Unfortunately, sharks face numerous threats in today's society, and as a result of extremely negative public attention (Jaws included), sharks have become one of the most maligned and misunderstood species on our planet. They have been pursued, hunted and slaughtered to the point that many species, including the Great White, are now endangered. In fact, per year over 10 million sharks are slaughtered needlessly: a truly shocking figure.
This project then is a commercial operation, run by Charmaine and her fantastic team, in the preservation and conservation of this magnificent creature. As a programme, its main purpose is to educate people on why it is absolutely essential to conserve this species. Volunteers, along with students, eco-tourists, dive operators and conservation organisations, all work together to gather data on these sharks in order to try and correct the unfairly negative misconceptions associated with these animals.

Come face to face with one of the world’s most misunderstood predators whilst aiding great white shark conservation. As a volunteer, not only will you get the incredible opportunity to dive with sharks, but you will also assist the team in raising awareness of the great white as you work alongside tourists and local school children to provide them with knowledge of the local environment and the importance of living in harmony with South Africa’s marine life.
