Gorillas remain some of the most mysterious and elusive creatures in the world, but what we do know is that their numbers have been seriously impacted by deforestation, human conflict, illegal animal trafficking and poaching. Gorilla tours provide dedicated volunteers and energetic conservationists the opportunity to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, work on conservation efforts in conjunction with local communities, and make a positive impact on these truly great apes.
Uganda is home to nearly half of the mountain gorillas still in the wild, so your journey will start there, in a country famed for its natural beauty, but one that is also on the front lines of conservation efforts. You will embark on one of these gorilla tours and go into the mist, where you will be able to experience what few people in the world have – direct interaction with gorillas in the wild. The indigenous populations of Uganda are also an important puzzle piece in the long-term survival of the gorillas, so some of your volunteer work will involve educating and collaborating with these communities to foster better gorilla-human relations. However, the stunning national parks of Uganda are not only home to gorillas. Your mountain trek will also give you a chance to track chimpanzees, go on a game safari with a trained guide, and learn a little more about the legendary carnivores of Uganda, as well as what needs to be done to preserve their habitats.
If you’ve always considered yourself a nature lover, but weren’t sure how you wanted to give back, learn more about gorilla tours and other conservation opportunities here. Your involvement is crucial to their survival, but the most important thing is your willingness to learn, get your hands dirty, and make a positive impact on the lives of these awe-inspiring creatures.
