The Animal Projects & Environmental Education Sdn. Bhd. (APE Malaysia) is an organisation which strives to improve animal welfare both in the wild and in captivity. Here at The Great Projects we work with APE Malaysia on three different projects; Zoo Assistant, Malaysia Orangutan Experience, and The Great Orangutan and Pygmy Elephant Project which you can find out more about by clicking on the links.

However, this blog is intended to raise awareness of a campaign that Ape Malaysia is running to help provide enrichment for the Sumatran Orangutan rather than their Bornean cousins. Through a crowdfunding effort, they are hoping to raise $4,800 to provide specialist hammocks for rescued Orangutans and Sun Bears. To get them that bit closer to their goal we have donated $320 which is enough for four hammocks, but they desperately need your help!

Animal Conservation

Orangutans and Sun Bears are a lot stronger than most people assume, and as a result of this, normal cloth hammocks stand no chance against the might of an Orangutan or a Sun Bear! This is why old, decommissioned fire hoses are used to create much stronger and more durable hammocks for the animals to nest in and play with.

Sumatran Orangutan

Unfortunately, as well as being a lot stronger these hammocks are an awful lot heavier than their cloth counterparts! This is where your donations will step in. The cost of transporting the hammocks to the centres is large, and with roughly 1.2 tonnes of equipment being sent over to Indonesia from Malaysia, every penny you can donate will make a difference.

Sun Bear

Once the target goal of $4,800 has been reached, Ape Malaysia will be able to send 40-50 hammocks to an Orangutan quarantine centre and 10 hammocks to the Sun Bears. Your money will make a discernible difference to the lives of the animals in Indonesia so please do spare whatever you can!
