One of our volunteers took a trip to the Samboja Lestari Orangutan Project over in Borneo earlier this year, and she loved her time there so much that she wanted to share some of her pictures with everyone! As you can see, Megan got stuck in helping the orangutans and sun bears at the sanctuary as well as thoroughly enjoying herself, so let’s take a look!
As you can see, Megan managed to get some amazing snaps during her time at the project!
Including one of Wiwik, a member of staff at Samboja, interacting with a young ape.
It wasn’t all about the orangutans though, and Megan loved her time preparing and hiding enrichment for the Sun Bears too!
Even leaf collecting is fun when it is in the jungle
The views on the canopy walk are quite spectacular
But undoubtedly the star of the show is this adorable youngster!
As well as her pictures, we asked Megan to say a few words about her time at Samboja and here’s what she had to say!
“I'm not very good with words but I would just urge anyone who has ever wanted to witness sunbears and orang-utans in a semi-wild environment to visit Samboja Lestari because it is literally one of the most beautiful terrestrial place I have ever visited. The sun bears need as much help and support as possible as the captive numbers are forever growing and you can see how much they need the support.
Samboja is an amazing place, and the people are lovely and they are so good at everything they do, I fully believe that the people at BOS foundation are doing everything they can to support the animals. It literally felt like a dream being there and participating in hands on work really made me realise how hard conservation is, but I would jump on a plane and do it again in a heartbeat just to see the baby orang-utans and all of the beautiful sunbears :)”
If Megan has inspired you to become an orangutan volunteer, then why not check out Samboja and help the sun bears and orangutans too!

Come face to face with one of the world’s most misunderstood predators whilst aiding great white shark conservation. As a volunteer, not only will you get the incredible opportunity to dive with sharks, but you will also assist the team in raising awareness of the great white as you work alongside tourists and local school children to provide them with knowledge of the local environment and the importance of living in harmony with South Africa’s marine life.
