Volunteers have accomplished some amazing achievements at the Samboja Lestari Orangutan Project over the past few weeks. We caught up with Volunteer Coordinator, Kate, to get the latest updates on the incredible work being done. Here’s what the dedicated volunteers, playful orangutans, and sun bears have been up to this month:

"At the beginning of the month, our wonderful group of volunteers helped to make renovations to a sun bear platform in a new enclosure for Fleur, who has to live alone due to being unable to socialise with other bears.

Fleur had not been observed using her new platform but once the renovations had been made she has since spent many an hour resting here (her favourite thing to do).

Meanwhile, on the islands, our platform is now starting to take form, with both groups this month helping to add another step to the process. Lots of fun and hard work, working alongside the local technicians.

Worth a special mention of course, lots of sweating, determination and teamwork ensued as we also collected 7 beloved ironwood poles from the forest, to erect on the new island for hanging rubber rope and barrels from.

Very proud of the whole team for digging deep and following us into the woods on our optimistic endeavours, it's always amazing to see what can be done when people work together for a great cause.

Soon the new island will be ready and Jeffrey and Yuyun who live on the adjacent island will be moved across so we can renovate their island before 2 new orangutans can finally get their freedom and be placed there!

Thank you from the team at Samboja and all the animals to all our volunteers this month for each and everyone’s contributions."
