Today marks the all-important International Orangutan Day, where we celebrate these unique and charming apes. It is also a day to recognise the many ways in which these animals are victimised as a result of human activity in the hope to encourage the small changes and actions we can take in order to aid in their conservation.
We would like to take this day to personally thank all of our volunteers and supporters for the many ways in which you have contributed to saving orangutans - from volunteering your time and donating money, to sharing resources about the cause! Over the past few months, previous volunteers and supporters of the Samboja Lestari and Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centres have banded together to generously donate over 84 million Indonesian rupiahs (£4334/$5729) of emergency funding to aid the care of the animals at both sanctuaries during this incredibly tough time. This donation will be used to purchase food for all the animals and will feed the over 400 orangutans and 50 sun bears at both centres for 2 weeks.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) had to close their doors to volunteers and visitors which put an immediate halt to in-person fundraising activities that the centres rely on to feed and care for the animals. Your generosity during this difficult time has helped to alleviate some of the financial pressures the centres are facing at this time and for that, we cannot thank you enough. Below is a personal acknowledgement to all our volunteers and supporters from Jamartin Sihite, CEO of BOS Foundation Indonesia.
For those that would like to contribute to the emergency fund, you are able to donate via the following links (separated by currencies) which are still taking vital donations that will continue to support the centre’s needs and the amazing BOSF team, who are working around the clock to care for these great apes - keeping their rehabilitation progress on track so that many more orangutans can one day be released back into the wild!

Come face to face with one of the world’s most misunderstood predators whilst aiding great white shark conservation. As a volunteer, not only will you get the incredible opportunity to dive with sharks, but you will also assist the team in raising awareness of the great white as you work alongside tourists and local school children to provide them with knowledge of the local environment and the importance of living in harmony with South Africa’s marine life.
