This month, we welcomed our first group of 2023 back at the Samboja Lestari Orangutan Project and we’ve been working on a lot of maintenance and enrichment tasks so far.
We started off the first week by cleaning and repainting the holding area for one of the sun bear enclosures.
Then this week, we have been back in the banana garden that we planted last year, clearing and composting around our banana trees to help them grow faster.
We even gave the finishing touches to the scarecrows which were put up as a strategy to deter the wild monkeys in the forest from destroying our trees. As well as the fruit, we plan to use the leaves and the trees for enrichment for the orangutans.
Another fun job has been making lots of hammocks to be installed in the orangutan areas.
We even had time to visit the nearby primary rainforest and take a trek in the rain, getting the full rainforest experience!
We finished the week by fixing and starting to rebuild platforms in some of the existing sun bear enclosures, for the bears to rest and play on.
It’s been a great start to the season back at Samboja with a great bunch of volunteers.
Thank you all for your amazing contributions to the project!

Come face to face with one of the world’s most misunderstood predators whilst aiding great white shark conservation. As a volunteer, not only will you get the incredible opportunity to dive with sharks, but you will also assist the team in raising awareness of the great white as you work alongside tourists and local school children to provide them with knowledge of the local environment and the importance of living in harmony with South Africa’s marine life.
