At the end of 2011 The Great Projects joined with Tourism Malaysia to launch 2 competitions, giving 3 people the chance to travel to Malaysia to volunteer with orangutans with The Great Orangutan Project. We had alot of inspiring entries and the winner will be posted on our blog soon. We were very happy to have the support of Tourism Malaysia for this and hope to continue to work with them to try to continue to promote responsible travel throughout Malaysia.

"What started as a bold idea has swiftly led to the establishment of the Institute of Primate Tourism Research (IPTR), based at the University of Roehampton. A co-founder of the IPTR, The Great Projects is determined to be a key influencer in how primate tours and volunteering should be carried out. Together with our IPTR colleagues at Roehampton, we hope to roll out "roadmaps" for better protection of apes and monkeys through responsible tourism".

“Elephant Family is delighted to be working with The Great Projects. Their strong commitment to conservation and responsible tourism offers participants the chance to experience the rainforest first hand and see how the efforts of our partner NGOs and local communities are protecting the Bornean elephant”.
Dan Bucknell, Head of Conservation and Campaigns.
Wild Travel magazine is the UK’s only magazine dedicated to wildlife travel, with trip reports from writers on location, in-depth profiles of the world’s best wildlife-watching destinations, guides to individual species, profiles of animal charities and their conservation work and practical information to help you make the most of every trip. Working alongside many of the most respected writers, photographers and tour operators in the business it’s our mission to show you that you don’t need to be an adrenaline-fuelled adventurer or a member of a wildlife documentary crew to enjoy many of nature’s greatest spectacles first hand.

Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards
In 2009 The Great Projects won the award for: Best for Conservation of Wildlife & Habitats. This award meant alot to us and as the awards are run by responsibletravel.com we know that to be Highly Commended by both them and Virgin really was an honour.

In 2010 The Great Projects went one further to claim the award for Best Volunteering Organisation. This award came after a year of introducing new projects to help save endangered animals worldwide and show that all the great work we do is not just restricted to one animal or one place. The Receipt of this showed acknowledgment of what we are trying to achieve; to put responsible travel at the height of the tourism sector.
The Guardian Green Travel List.jpg)
In 2011 Our Great Gorilla Project was featured in the Guardian green travel list. This list comprises of the most meaningful and responsible travel options availible worldwide. This marked a new level of achievement as we had yet to be mentioned so highly in a national newspaper as prestigious as the Guardian. We strongly hope that as we continue to create projects around the world that we may be able to feature more in this list.
